Personal Learning Path 8

This resource is an online game for students to review and practice their counting skills. The game is appropriate for students grades pre-K - kindergarten and aligns with the standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.A"When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. https://www.education.com/game/counting-pizza-party/

The activity gives students a number which they must count of toppings for their pizza. When students are done counting the toppings, a bell rings. 


The game then counts the topics with the students allowed to review. 


The resource provides a variety of games that students can play as they master new skills. 



Reflection

I think that this is a great activity for students to practice their counting skills in an engaging way. One of my favorite aspects of the game is that is a part of a larger resource that allows students to keep practicing as they progress and learn new skills. I also really liked how easy to use and straightforward the platform is. The technology is simple enough that most young children would be able to work with it. One thing that I did not like about it, however, is that the game only provided 2 or three rounds before prompting students to move on to another game. While I don’t think that students should spend too much time working on one game, it would be nice to provide more rounds for students who are still engaged or those who want to continue practicing on this particular game and don’t feel ready to move on. Another thing they I would change about this game is that the instructions and counting are only provided through audio. This provides challenges for student who have difficulty hearing, those who prefer written instructions, and for classrooms that may not have headsets. I would use this game in my classroom to help students practice counting after we have worked on this together as a class.

  1. Hey Molly, I love this post because I look forward to teaching pre k-kindergarten. I also do not like the fact that they get three rounds and then it moves on to the next lesson. I believe that this is when a teacher or parent should step in. I do not believe that a child should spend too much time in a game yet it should be mastered before moving forward. I believe the games are build upon each other. Students all learn at a different pace and they should master subjects before we move forward, there is also a report card mode in which we can see where every child growth and difficulties ( i have a membership I don't know if its different for non members). I love the map journey as well because children get to also celebrate their accomplishments. great post!

  2. This resources seems like a great tool. Not only is it a fun game that allows children to simultaneously challenge themselves, but it is a great practice material. Thank you for sharing such a great resource!

 For this week’s blog post I wanted to do something a little different. Instead of sharing a game or online resource to use when teaching, I wanted to share something that emphasizes the importance of teaching math and how kids can learn to love math.  Fractions  For the next few blog posts I want to focus on fractions. Personal Learning Path Post 11

 For this post I wanted to focus on a resource that could allow students to do two things: get outside (especially if it is being implemented during this beautiful summer weather) and to have some active time where they are not expected to sit still at a desk. The more time I spend teaching, the more I recognize how important it is for students to be able to move and physically interact with what they are learning.
