Personal Learning Path 4

 For this week I wanted to continue my work on long division. This time, however, I wanted to focus on a resource that would allow myself and other teachers to easily differentiate instruction and activities for students. Some students comprehend and master long division very quickly, and others (myself included) struggle with remembering all of the steps and where to place all of the numbers. I found a resource that provides two different worksheets for students. The first one is highly scaffolded to help students remember where to place each of the numbers as they work through the equations. The second sheet is less scaffolded to allow students the opportunity to work through the problems without prompts for where to place each number. The lesson aligns with CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.2 Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.

Reflection
I really liked this resource because it makes it easy for teachers to provide support for students who are struggling and challenges to students who have strong comprehension of long division. I would implement this to my class after a lesson on long division and after working through problems together. I think I might give all students the first worksheet to begin, and those who exhibit a strong understanding of the material or who finish the first sheet, can be given the second, more advanced sheet to continue practicing. One thing I would like to see from this resource is more worksheets that students could use as they begin to work with remainders, as these only provide examples of division with no remainders. If I were to use this in class I would adapt this, taking the general format and expanding it to include problem sets with remainders.

  1. This is great, Molly. I love finding effective scaffolding tools and this seems like it would be really helpful for students. Seeing how this process scaffolded also helps me as a teacher. There are times I take some of my mathematical thinking for granted but sheets like this remind me what a student is going through when first being confronted by long division.

 For this week’s blog post I wanted to do something a little different. Instead of sharing a game or online resource to use when teaching, I wanted to share something that emphasizes the importance of teaching math and how kids can learn to love math.  Fractions  For the next few blog posts I want to focus on fractions. Personal Learning Path Post 11

 For this post I wanted to focus on a resource that could allow students to do two things: get outside (especially if it is being implemented during this beautiful summer weather) and to have some active time where they are not expected to sit still at a desk. The more time I spend teaching, the more I recognize how important it is for students to be able to move and physically interact with what they are learning.
